Teaching my son William to read I have just found my old notes on how I taught my non verbal son with autism, dyspraxia and developmental verbal dyspraxia to read. I hope you find my notes useful.PLEASE CHECK IN COMMENTS BELOW FOR SOME OF THE RESOURCES I USED! After teaching William how to point, I taught him all the sounds of the alphabet plus a few extra ee oo ar sh ch uy th I also used an app called , “Phonemes” by small talk which is free.https://itunes.apple/au/app/id384170714 All their apps are Free! Here is the link to 13 of their free apps; ispeakapp/2011/05/09/smalltalk-apps-all-13-of-them-are-now-free-at-the-app-store/ Due to William’s dyspraxic problems he has good and bad days. I have been told by his O.T. that some times their bodies don’t work properly and this will happen. This maybe the answer as to why some days your son works well and other days not. Lots of children have motor dyspraxia and hand over hand guidance is needed to help them build the neuro pathways for that task. Another thing I did was to use William’s finger to trace the letter sound whilst you say the sound. Letter matching activities is also useful. Next I started using discrimination on letter sounds starting with 2 sounds on a sloping board giving my son hand over hand guidance of what is expected of him until eventually he was independent. I then increased the number of sounds over a few months to around 8 sounds. Here is a list of the activities I did with William. Picture discrimination for action and pre-positions starting with two cards. I labelled the back of the card with the sentence so every time I used that picture I would use the same words. Example: The boy is jumping. The girl is drinking. The boy is standing between the trees. I bought my cards from; difflearn/category/verbs_prepositions I took many picture of items around the house and did discrimination with those too. Do many pictures to words and words to picture activities. Building words with letter bricks and joining letter to make words using phonics. windmill.net.au/CatalogueRetrieve.aspx?ProductID=5306197&A=SearchResult&SearchID=40097088&ObjectID=5306197&ObjectType=27 specialneedstoys.au/shop/index.php?main_page=advanced_search_result&search_in_description=1&keyword=coko+letter+bricks&x=22&y=10 Base plate for the letter bricks, there are many sites that stock them. Here’s a link for you. edex.au/coko-base-plate-small-for-standard-coko-bricks.html?cmp=cel&trigger=ac… For USA - This product is good too. difflearn/…/Le…/Visual_Aids_for_the_Classroom Here is a great word building game for CVC .amazon/Think-Fun-7760-ThinkFun-Whats/dp/B00073JTQQ I then added words and sentences. I made up all my words and sentences in a large font and laminated them. Next I added two sentence strips to two action or pre-position cards , one starting with ;The boy and one starting with; The girl. This taught William how and where to look for reading. Starting from the left to right and just focussing on and discriminating The boy or The girl. Slowly moving along the sentence. Started with two and slowly increased the number of cards and sentences. Once William could do these. I moved on to just sentence strips building up slowly. We also used this software which is brilliant called Readingdoctor. It works with a mouse or touch screen. You can customise the tasks just with two letter sounds or two words and then build on that. It is fun! I attended Bartec’s conference and he was just amazing! readingdoctor.au/ Free trials are available. Within the next three weeks Bartec has designed an app which will teach the same things. I will let you know when it comes out. It is going to be called, “letter sounds 1 pro” app. This website is really good too. aacliteracy.psu.edu/index.php/page/show/id/4 Literacy Instructions for children with special needs.
