Teahjay’s 48 Hours Incarceration Rejected But… Members of the House of Representatives have unanimously agreed that Sinoe County Superintendent J. Milton Teahjay be immediately incarcerated for 48 hours for allegedly raining insults at Representative Matthew Zarzar and reported violation of Liberia’s Public Financial and Budget laws. The House reached the decision following heated deliberations in both open and executive sessions on Thursday, July 19, 2013. Representative Bill Twehway of Electoral District # 3, Montserrado County made the motion for the Sinoe County Superintendent to be imprisoned at the Monrovia Central Prison. In his motion of contempt against Superintendent Teahjay, he recommended that the Liberia Anti- Corruption Commissions (LACC) should immediately investigate the Sinoe Superintendent after serving his imprisonment. He mandated that LACC should report its findings to the House’s Plenary in two weeks after the probe. The Unity Party (UP) senior partisan mandated that the Sinoe County Assistant Development Romeo Quiah should pay L$ 4999 cent into government’s coffer and provide receipt to the 53rd Legislature for lying under oath. 47 lawmakers’ in attendance voted for the Sinoe County Superintendent to serve imprisonment at the Monrovia Central Prison or the Liberia National Police headquarters if the prison on the UN Drive is closed at 6: pm. After the House‘s Speaker J. Alex Tyler restated the motion to be implemented, Sergeant At arms Martin Johnson escorted the Superintendent outside of the House’s chamber. Several pro and anti Teahjay’s supporters were shouting political slogans on the grounds of the Capitol Building. Superintendent Teahjay was escorted to the Monrovia Central Prison under tight security presence along with his supporters of the Liberia National Student Union (LINSU) headed by its president Varney Jersey who were leading several youths. The Monrovia Central Prison Deputy Superintendent Eric Dennis said the House’s Sergeant At arms Johnson arrived on the ground of the prison late (6:pm). According to him, no one can enter the prison compound after 6: pm. He appealed to the Sergeant Johnson to return to the prison with Superintendent Teahjay before 6: pm. Tomorrow, Friday, July 19. But the House’s Sergeant refused, he was forced to take the Sinoe County Superintendent to the Liberia National Police headquarters to be imprisoned. When he arrived on the scene along with huge crowd, LNP Chief Inspector Gregory Coleman and Police Support Union (PSU) Commander T. Swen said the Police Director Christopher Massaquoi was not in his office. According to the senior Police officers, the letter from the House is only addressed to the Director and no one has the power to accept the communication for the detention of the Sinoe County Superintendent. The House’s Sergeant tried contacting Speaker Tyler to generate a response from Director Massaquoi via mobile phone, but the Director phone was off. The Speaker however mandated the Sergeant- At- Arm to remain at the police headquarters along with Superintendant Teahjay until the Director is contacted. A stalemate was apparent as the paper went to bed. Meanwhile, during Teahjay’s presence at the police headquarters, he told the media that what was happening to him was allegedly tailored and masterminded by Sinoe County Senator Mabutu Vlah Nyenpan who happens to be (his) Teahjay’s long time adversary. In contrast, Senator Nyenpan said he could not have spoken to the press yesterday owing to a pending press conference which will be held today.
