Team Play, Timely Goals by Dayton Proves to be the Differences in Overtime Win over Danbury Doug Tibbs (Dayton, Ohio) With the home crowd gripping the edge of their seats, Lee McClure goal 3 minutes into overtime sent the Hara Arena crowd to their feet as the Dayton Demonz beat the Danbury Whalers 3-2. This was the Demonz third win in as many nights. Most importantly the Demonz have shown lately they are capable of challenging the Whalers in a play-off series. With tonights head to head win over the Whalers, the Demonz are the first team to reach 30 wins on the season, Dayton now has a 3 point lead over Danbury for first place in the Federal Hockey League (FHL), heading down the home stretch. Both teams know a win or loss in their remaining games may be the difference between finishing first in the FHL regulation standings, and home ice advantage, if it comes down to these two teams in the play-offs. This evenings game had a play-off atmosphere to it. Back and forth play between both teams. Strong goaltending by Daytons Jeff Rose and Danburys Mike Brown, with neither goalie giving up a goal in the first two periods. The final period saw the game intensify, in an already furious game. Danbury would get on the scoreboard first just over a minute in the 3rd period on Igor Karlovs goal, putting the Whalers up 1-0. Jesse Felten tied the game on the power-play, two minutes later, making it even 1-1. Danburys Rob Dongara goal a few minutes later gave the Whalers a 2-1 lead. The Demonz were able to battle back and tie the Whalers and sending the game into overtime, as Ahmed Mahfouz scored his league leading 36th goal on the power-play with just over 5 minutes left in regulation. Regulation play would end at 2-2. Dayton pressured Danbury in the overtime session, out shooting the Whalers 4-1, with McClure goal winning it for the Demonz 3-2 at the 3:35 mark in the extra frame. Stars of the game were awarded to; Daytons Lee McClure (1st Star), Daytons Ahmed Mahfouz (2nd Star), and the 3rd Star was also a Demon, awarded to Daytons Dustin Skinner.
