Team moves to avert Nakuru violence plot: Nakuru, Kenya: Rongai District security committee has moved to quell rising tension between two communities following claims of selective application of the law by the provincial administration. Area District Commissioner David Koskei admitted Wednesday that there was mounting anxiety between members of the two communities. “The situation has been put under control and we assure residents of their security as matters raised by the communities will be addressed,” said Mr Koskei. Early this week, a contingent of armed General Service Unit officers was deployed in the area after intelligence reports indicated the two communities were planning to attack one another. In the past few months, members of one community have been accusing a local provincial administration officer of being biased when dealing with security issues around Salgaa trading centre . “The officer has been targeting one community when carrying out his duties. While members of his community are freely engaging in brewing illicit liquor and oil siphoning, the officer has focused on only those from the other community,” said a resident who did not want to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter. The officers arrested four youths for interrogation but later released them. Koskei Wednesday held a public meeting at the Salgaa chief’s office where he urged locals to maintain law and order. Illegal businesses “We are not going to allow officers who apply the law selectively. Those engaging in criminal activities and illegal businesses must be arrested regardless of their ethnic background,” Koskei told the meeting that was attended by the entire local security team. Salgaa trading centre , located along the Nakuru- Eldoret highway, is a popular stopover for long distance truck drivers who frequent the place for relaxation before proceeding with their journeys to the western part of the country. The area, however, is notorious for illegal trade like oil siphoning, theft of transit goods and prostitution, among others. #Cylus
