With the bright light coming in behind them, Valerie looked like a vision from a dream, and he swallowed hard, feeling his mouth become parched. Valerie took a step forward, and the church assistant closed the heavy doors. As the light from the church lamps illuminated her, his heart started beating faster in his chest. She was breathtaking. The ivory silk hugged her petite body in all the right spots, and, as she removed the woolen shawl and handed it to her mother, he noticed the beautiful pattern on the lace sleeves that showed just enough skin to make blood rush wild in his veins. Her hair was pulled up and arranged with small rose clips, leaving only a few strands to fall loosely on her shoulders underneath the veil. Her hands were shaking a little as her fingers squeezed the white rose bouquet. He held his breath while she walked down the aisle, and when her aquamarine eyes locked with his, the rest of the world disappeared. She was all he could see, all he wanted to see for the rest of his life. When her father gave her away to him, Ryan took her hand and kissed it in such an old-fashioned chivalrous way that it made Valerie giggle. “You’re gorgeous,” he whispered. He noticed the sparkle in her eyes, the one he’d come to learn meant she was on the verge of tears although, this time, they were happy ones. “Let’s get this over with so we can get to the ‘You may kiss the bride’ part, shall we?” Valerie smiled and nodded, taking the final step toward the altar where Kevin and Karen were waiting for them with a huge smile.
