TechBook Training Unpacked The hidden $4.0 Million cost and three weeks of substitute teachers they do not talk about. Educate our children not the teachers. This year, Oak Ridge School System has paid Discover Ed $292,500 to provide training to teachers and administrators on the use of TechBooks. They purchased 117 different sessions of training with up to 25 trainees per session. That amounts to 2,925 teacher-sessions, at each session being one day long. This translates to 2,925 teacher-days or 17,550 teacher-hours of training. We have 411 teachers in our school system thus on an average each teacher undergoes seven to eight teacher-days of training. In other words one and a half week of training. If this training is held during the school year then each classroom will have a substitute teacher for one and a half week. On an average one teacher-day costs us about $425.00, additionally a substitute teacher costs $80 per day. Hence it costs the taxpayers about $500 per lost teacher-day. The total cost adds up to nearly $1.5 Million. A little less during summer break. Adding the cost of the training package ($292,500), nearly $2.0 Million are spent towards TechBooks training. The total cost of TechBook training over a three years period is close to $4.0 million and each classroom will have a substitute teacher for three weeks.
