Ted Cruz continues to baffle and intrigue me. Im not completely sure why. I guess because I have never seen so smart a man act so stupidly so regularly. Hes either an incredibly calculating, wholly cynical political animal, or hes mental. Maybe both. In his latest bid to see how far down the right-wing rabbit hole he can go, hes demanding a Constitutional Amendment that would specifically bar either the Federal government or the courts from overturning State marriage laws. This effort is obviously meant to stop the progress of SS marriage rights which now benefit 70% of all Americans, with the other 30% soon to follow. He has been threatening to do this for months, but apparently Obamas SOTU address put him over the edge. Or something. His position on this is not surprising, but his intention to introduce the Amendment is bizarre on a number of levels. For one thing it has almost no chance of succeeding, because the votes are simply not there. (And he must know this) And his timing is probably off by at least several years. At this point, even most of his fellow Republicans have moved on, acknowledging in deed if not word that this whole issue is a fait accompli. So what is the point here? Is it just another way to get on the front page for a few minutes? Is it an attention-getting reminder to his faithful that nobody is more conservative? Is this a preemptive strike on the race for the Republican nomination? I think Republicans these days are wrong about most things most of the time. But I still at least get where many of them are coming from. So much of what Cruz says and does, on the other hand, makes no sense at all to me. If someone drew a series of cartoons of me reading about Cruz, nearly every one would have a thought-bubble above my head filled with, WTF??
