Teenagers are especially vulnerable to verbal punishments as they - TopicsExpress

Teenagers are especially vulnerable to verbal punishments as they are in a developmental stage of learning about their self worth and finding themselves in terms of identity. They can internalise the yelling, put downs and verbal punishments in general as a refelction of who they are and part of their identity which can create negative feelings of self worth. They are also more prone to interpreting the verbal punishments or yelling as a personal attack even if that was not the intention. Regardless, yelling doesnt change or reduce behaviour. What it does do is send a message to children that you are not in control therefore empowering them. Its ok to feel angry but just like we try to teach children, walk away and deal with it when your emotions are more in control.
