Telefonica Begins 4G Rollout in Argentina at Last BUENOS AIRES – Spanish telecommunications giant Telefonica on Thursday fired up its first 4G base stations in downtown Buenos Aires, thus launching the process of bringing that high-speed wireless technology to Argentine customers. Those first antennas are part of a more than 27,000-kilometer (16,780-mile) fiber-optic network that spans all of Argentina and includes more than 7,700 base stations to support mobile communications, the company said in a statement. The infrastructure build-out will continue in 2015, Telefonica, which operates under the Movistar brand in Argentina and much of the rest of Latin America, said. It said it expects to achieve full 4G coverage in all of Argentina’s provincial capitals by 2016, in keeping with the requirements of the Communications Secretariat. Jose Luis Rodriguez Zarco, Telefonica’s institutional relations director, described the arrival of 4G in Argentina as a very important milestone. Telefonica said in the statement that it plans to invest more than 8.5 billion pesos (some $993 million) to expand its infrastructure network to support fixed and mobile connectivity.
