Temperatures continue to fall this afternoon across Southern - TopicsExpress

Temperatures continue to fall this afternoon across Southern Illinois with low 20s near I-64 and upper 20s near the Ohio River. Overnight, breezy northwest winds will keep blowing the cold air in as high pressure settles into the Lower Missouri Valley. Monday morning temperatures will be in the low to mid teens across Southern Illinois with afternoon highs only in the upper 20s. While cold, these temperatures not nearly as cold as whats in store for later this week. (See below) A ridge will build north off the West Coast to the southern shore of Alaska by midweek. The warm air surging north forces cold air south across the Midwest (this occurs as the atmosphere tries to balance out). The coldest air will be found on the eastern side of very strong Arctic high pressure (1050mb or higher depending on the model) expected to move into the Plains by Wednesday afternoon. This will cause temperatures to plummet Wednesday afternoon with single digits likely by the evening. The pressure gradient will be tight leading to strong north/northwest winds which will push wind chills well below zero. By Thursday morning, temperatures are projected to be around 0˚ before high pressure begins to move east and southwest winds kick in to help gradually warm the airmass over Southern Illinois.
