Temporary work permits for those cheated by fake firms JEDDAH – The Ministry of Labor has confirmed the possibility of issuing temporary work permits to workers who arrived in the Kingdom under the sponsorship of fake companies which did not provide them residence permits (iqamas). An informed source in the ministry told Okaz/Saudi Gazette that such expat workers should look for an alternative sponsor in the Green Zone. The source said temporary work permits will be issued with the entry numbers. The iqamas will be issued by the Passports Department later. Workers are able to change their profession irrespective of the firm and its present activity during the grace period, the source said, adding that all firms that have files in labor offices can benefit from the exemptions and facilities of the campaign, irrespective of the date when the file was opened. For complaints workers can approach the department concerned in the Labor Office. He said it is possible for domestic workers to transfer their sponsorship to the private sector. The Kingdom has seven million workers from 100 nationalities, at least 30 percent of whom are working in the building and construction sector. The Kingdom is striving to decrease dependence on low efficiency workers.
