Ten minutes ago, my dad and I were quietly and happily watching one of my top-5 favorite films: Holiday, with Grant & Hepburn. Id always thought the film was about money, but its also really about surviving family. As members of one of Americas wealthiest and most important business families, Katharine Hepburn has one room of actual fun she escapes to. Her brother Ned just gets drunk all the time. Their sister Julia fits in to their life of boring wealth just fine. At one point, while Hepburn is hiding from a big swanky party by retreating to her room, Ned tells her, You know...at bottom, Julia is a very dull girl. And Hepburn responds, Oh, you two just never got along. Such an obvious family truth, but it never hit me before like it has today--because now the house is filled with very nice people who seem to be having a fine time, but we had to turn the movie off because it was getting too loud, and now the goddamn TV is blaring some bullshit sports show, and Im typing this while hiding from the party in my room. My family is very nice and Im very lucky, and I love them as much as I can. But maybe weve just never gotten along. I think Holiday just moved into my top three.
