He was an introvert all his life but turned to acting to overcome his fears. 7. Now, Dad... to Noah Beery. 8. The Great Escape 9. He served in the Merchant Marine. He was an actual Human Being. 10. Rockford, modeled on Raymond Chandlers Philip Marlowe, wasnt just another detective show: it was deft satire, and L.A. was its target-- a generous one--so it was both a gentle link back in time to novelist Nathanel West and, even better, the forerunner to my beloved Big Lebowski.
