Ten years ago---when my son was four, he jumped off everything, screamed at the top of his lungs, ran into furniture and people-- full force. Id often wonder what I was doing wrong as a parent. I set firm but kind limits, I used timeouts, I tried punishment..... nothing seemed to work for this particular four year old boy. My hair turned gray. I felt defeated. I heard whispers behind my back (and directly to my face) regarding my ill behaved child and my lack of parenting skills.... It was very disheartening. One day-- a new friend, Maria Richardson came over she worked in the field of occupational therapy. She took one look at my sweet boy and said-- that boy seems to be struggling with Sensory modulation disorder (SMD). (As a special education teacher-- you would think I would notice when my own child struggled.) She helped me with at home sensory integration therapy and my 4 year old became a different child. Long story short- be a Maria ---if you see a parent struggling with a child. Dont judge, dont criticize-- lend a hand. It made a huge difference in my life. Whenever a see a parent stuggling in public-- I always send my best thoughts in their direction. I always think-- that they are trying their very best. Parenting is a tough job. it truly takes a village. Thanks to Maria-- she made a big difference in our lives, and still does.
