Ten years ago Adrienne Clarkson, the Canadian Governor General at the time, proclaimed July 28th as "A Day of Commemoration of the Great Upheaval” - in other words, the expulsion of the French speaking Acadian people from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward island, to make way for British settlers. Beginning in 1755 the Acadians lost there houses, farms and livestock in the expulsion - “Le Grand Derangement” in French. Families were torn apart and scattered. Many wound up in the French territory of Louisiana and evolved into the Cajun community with its unique culture. Some Acadians remained, others returned, and there is still a strong Acadian presence in the Maritimes. The Canadian band The Band recorded a couple of songs about the Acadian expulsion, including the lovely “Acadian Driftwood.” Enjoy.
