Ten years ago, this week, I took three month old Griffin to our beloved and nerdy pediatrician in Baltimore for what I thought was going to be a reassuring visit that the spot on his head was simply an infected big bite. As usual, I was totally wrong and totally UNDERestimating what was happening with my kid. What ensued was a hazmat like disposal of the clothes off my back as the abscess broke open all over me, a trip to the hospital, several years of trying to understand this little known outside the hospital issue called MRSA, lots of doctors, lots of antibiotics and ultimately a discussion with author Maryn McKenna about a book she was writing called Superbug. Our family finally kicked MRSA out, just in time to welcome a trach baby who oddly enough never tested positive for it in a swab. Maryn has since become a Facebook friend and my go-to for scary diseases. Here is her latest in why we (Americans) need to worry more about controlling the virus in West Africa and support our healthcare workers if they are willing to go there and help.
