Tenement life in Lowell, MA for the thousands of immigrants - TopicsExpress

Tenement life in Lowell, MA for the thousands of immigrants pouring into the city at the turn into the 20th century was difficult Blocks were built so close together that many inner rooms received no natural light at all. When disease struck it swept through entire neighborhoods with considerable mortality. Heres an example from the work of Herbert Dearden Hope, who documented housing conditions across the country and took several photos in Lowell. Here are Suffolk St. wooden frame tenements overhanging the canal captured from from the Broadway Bridge., in 1903. Originals are in the Social Museum Collection at Harvard University. Wonder if anyone went canal fishing off their back porch?
