Tenerife (somewhere in between 9erife & 11erife) Just got back - TopicsExpress

Tenerife (somewhere in between 9erife & 11erife) Just got back from a celebratory holiday in the sun with the love of my life Mel, chilled out mainly, read books and caught some rays of the solar kind. Did a token spot of rock fishing without much success aside from having every type of soft plastic lure, chomped, mutilated or totally destroyed. Although the lizard fish had razor sharp teeth they also had sizeable mouths unlike most of the other macro mouthed critters that seemed to posses a veritable armoury of surgical equipment. So the Merlins (as in Mermaid/Gremlin hybrid) as I call em could be caught and the others couldnt, I have encountered this before in other far flung places. Still I did manage to snare a couple of pretty ones and Ive never seen such a black fish as the one pictured, the electric blue flashes were truly neon. In attempt to halt the systematic destruction of my quickly evaporating soft lure collection I knocked up some home spun impromptu bodies fabricated out of a hot pink kitchen glove. Had this jan made lure been effective in preventing being instantly macerated, or caught loads of the offending toothed ones Id be crowing now. In one respect the idea worked beyond expectations, no attention from teeth, scapula, hole punches or what ever else the fish were using to ravage my SPs, by equal measure I didnt get as much as a fish breaking wind near my creation. Based on a mini Flying C I felt it must work a treat, in fact to the contrary, it was a glorious failure, still it was worth a try and at least I had the satisfaction of knowing that what went down into the depths came back intact :) Luckily I only cut off the skirt of one of the .99Eurocent gloves and they remain perfectly functional, an xmas gift for a loved one perhaps :) We hired a 15hp rib out to explore the Gigantos cliffs which reminded me of Norway plus a bit of dangling but again same old story as above, Mel loves bartering knocked the rental company down by 25% still at 150 Euros for 4 hours they would have been comfortably in profit I guess. At least the scenery was very dramatic as is lots of the island once you escape from kiss me quick. paddy, brit and scottish bars plus all that goes with that kind of resort wildlife. Tenerife has much more to offer, the deep sea angling can be phenomenal although its not my thing, I did some yellow fin tuna fishing 30 miles off Capetown and caught one of 65 kilos. The whole battle was an ordeal, with very little upper bobby strength, I struggled and enjoyed about as much as trying to bump start a car in winter with no rotor arm attached under the distributor cap. I speak with some experience on the comparison as I did assist with a few other fellow anglers competing in the Normark Winter at Evesham to try and start a car after the match. It was an Austin 1800, a big heavy old vehicle and the owner was no jockey at 20 stone, after 15 breathless minutes the collective of bump starters efforts came to a halt when said owner/driver remembered hed removed the rotor arm so his car wouldnt get stolen ????????? Yet I felt the exactly the same then as when my 65kilo yellow fin was gaffed into the boat & unceremoniously bludgeoned to death by the captain with an aluminium little league baseball bat. I still can hear that hollowing chiming of the bat as the life was slowly but surely beaten out of the magnificent beast that for thirty minutes had tried to rip my adams out on their sockets or drag me into the Indian Ocean. A hickory bat might have been somewhat more wholesome but as I saw the life dimming in the massive tunas eye and the breath taking iridescence sheen fade it made me angry if not a little guilty. In contrast I would have loved to have possessed said maiming implement that freezing cold day on the car park when I am several others ended up sweating cobs. Talking of winter, it was a huge shock to the system when our homecoming aircraft doors opened at BHX airport, zero degrees 24 less than where we had been for the last 7 days. Not that I wasnt glad to be on terra firma, as wed just experienced an aborted attempt to land on the runway, the captain cool as a cucumber announced what sounded like. Captain here, weve had to avoid landing due to a fox, a wind sock or a pair of socks that have been reported lying on the runway.......well it was one of those we all had to suppose. I used to have a dread of flying, working at Rolls-Royce and having more of an insider viewpoint of aircraft and flying anomalies never helped. Take offs and landings being one area that Ive always paid special almost fanatical attention to ever since, still it all ended well and the circular banked approach for the second attempt was quite magical watch all the street lights etc, very festive. Ill no doubt plonk some other witterings of mine before Santa calls but in the meantime I would like to extend my gratitude for all the goodwill, kind words and genuine heartfelt support from each and every one who posted on my last thread. It reached almost 40K in our respective FB networks and thats a pretty humbling feat from where Im sitting. A million thanks. Good Luck & Great Angling! Jan
