Tens of thousands of Hungarians protest against proposed internet tax , or as Reuters puts it Around 100,000 Hungarians rally for democracy as internet tax hits nerve. Pick the one you like. Prime Minister Viktor Orbáns government, which has been widely accused of adopting anti-democratic policies, first unveiled plans for the new tax late last week in the draft 2015 tax bill submitted to parliament. Basically he wants to tax €0.50 per gigabyte of internet usage/data traffic. Seriously, how out of touch can a government be? Fact is, as a government, you can do just about anything. Retain only the thinnest facade of democracy. Enact downright destructive economic policies. Bankrupt the future of entire generations. Trample basic human rights. Disband or sell public services. Doesnt matter. You wont have to fear at all from anyone under the age of 35. But. Do NOT. TOUCH. THEIR. INTERNET. Meanwhile the European Commission as well as the US have slammed the hell out of the Hungarian government : It’s not a question whether the tax is legal or not. First, if you take it in the domestic Hungary context, it’s the latest of what a lot of people would see as troubling actions. Its part of a pattern and has to be seen as part of that pattern of actions which have limited freedom or thought to take rents without achieving a wider economic or social interest [...] . Hungary is below the EU’s average in virtually every single digital indicator. The digital part of the economy is probably the main thing in the economy keeping Europe out of recession right now. So taxing that, in a country that is already below the average on digital indicators, is a particularly bad idea [..] Ill just add to that , that if the digital part of the economy is the one keeping Europe out of a recession its the downright idiotic austerity measures that keep Europe from actually having sustainable growth :) But dont let me burst the bubble of neo-liberal economists.
