Tens of thousands of people participated in rival rallies throughout Egypt today after General Abdel-Fatah el-Sisi called for massive demonstrations to “show the world” that the military and police are authorized to confront violence. Five people are reported dead in Alexandria, Egypt’s second largest city, as the result of clashes between protestors. Meanwhile, former President Mohamed Morsi is under investigation for allegedly conspiring with Hamas during Egypt’s 2011 revolution, and the White House announced it would continue its financial assistance to Egypt and use that aid to push for a quick democratic transition.
