Tenses post-8 (Present continuous tense—4) Hi Friends, Tonight we are going to learn about “LOVE”. Do you like it? Yes. You like it. You watched many movies. One thing is common. Hero says something to heroine. What does he say?He says “I LOVE YOU”. Probably you may love someone. What do you say to you dream girl/ dream boy? You say “I LOVE YOU”. Now read carefully. Now a days, you feel love on her/him. At present you have the wonderful feeling about her/him. Now you have love for her. You are having love now (at present). Then you should say “I am loving you” instead of “I love you”. But in all the movies hero or heroine says “I love you” instead of “I’m loving you”. You also say “I love you” why ???????? Now the answer: you should never say “im loving you”. Why ? see the below points 1 by 1 slowly and carefully. 1) Some verbs should not be used in “present continuous tense”. I gave the lists of those words. See below. a)Verbs related to Senses: feel, hear, see, smell, taste Verbs related to Opinion: assume, believe, consider, doubt, and feel (= think), find (= consider), suppose, think. b)Verbs related to Mental states: forget, imagine, know, mean, notice, recognize, remember, and understand c)Verbs related to Emotions / desires: envy, fear, dislike, hate, hope, like, love, mind, prefer, regret, want, wish d)Verbs related to Measurement: contain, cost, hold, measure, weigh e)Others: look (=resemble), seem, be (in most cases), have (when it means to possess). So you should not say as below. Im loving you. He is liking her. They are knowing me. The shirt is costing 10 dollars. The above sentences are wrong. 2) But “at present “you have love on somebody”. But you should not use “present continuous tense”. Then how can you express your love. Then you can use “simple present tense”, and say “I love you”. Now see the following sentences. All these are correct sentences. I love you. He likes her. They know me. The shirt costs 10 dollars. 3) And sometimes some verbs like feel, have, see are used in “present continuous tense” but with a different meaning. see below examples. She is having dinner. (Here having does not mean possess. Here having= eating) Im seeing my friend tomorrow (here seeing does not mean looking. Here seeing = planning to meet) friends, I know this lesson is a little bit difficult. But you must understand and learn this for your future. Read again and again. Then the concept becomes easy for you. You can do it. Remember one thing. you are learning TENSES to an indepth level. Let us meet later friends . Bye.
