Tension grips Ralan area Correspondent OLD RALAN AREA, AUG 12 (NPN):Published on 13 Aug. 2014 1:55 AM IST Tension ran high in Nagaland (Ralan Area)-Assam border Tuesday following a protest rally organized by Adivasis along the stretch of Liphayan approach road Tuesday morning. According to information given by border magistrate and SDO (civil) P Phuleshe Yepthomi, the rally was organized in protests against the alleged abduction of two Adivasi youths. He said that 155Bn CRPF stationed at the area negotiated with the Adivasis to stop the protest. At around 1.40 p.m., unconfirmed information was received that Adivasis surrounded Ronsuyan village and Chandalashung ‘B’ village and damaged two of the houses in Ronsuyan village. SDO (civil) also confirmed that Adivasis began firing blank shots in the area and Ralan area public retaliated. Talking to Nagaland Post, Ralan Old Village Council chairman S.O. Humtsoe informed that there had been land conflict between Adivasis and Ralan since the last many years. He also said that the government had tried to settle the issue, however Adivasiss did not accept the terms and this caused the current problem in the area. Humtsoe alleged that the public had to retaliate as Aivasis National Liberation Army (ANLA) in their combat uniforms started beating up the youth and killing all the cattle present in the area. He appealed the government to settle the issue at the earliest. Naga Women Hoho, Ralan area chairperson Yisali urged the government to settle the issue as the situation was likely to turns to worst. More than 70 houses of Halwa’s (Adivasis’s Tenants) residence of Old Ralan village area were burnt down by public of Old Ralan area. Talking to Nagaland Post, Home Minister (Nagaland) Y Patton appealed the governments of Nagaland and Assam to restrain the border areas from flaring up the situation and also to maintain peace law and order in the border area. He further appealed the public to maintain calm since the state government has taken all necessary steps to contain the situation by deploying securities forces. He also said that deployment of state security forces to the area was not for confrontation but to control the situation and to bring peace and understanding to the people living in the disturb area. He further appealed neutral forces stationed in Disturb Area Belt (DAB) to play a more active role in condemning the fragile situation in the area. He also added that lots of misleading rumors were also doing the rounds and appealed the people of both the states not to react hastily over such rumors. According to sources in Golaghat, All Adivasis Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA) has called a 12-hour bandh from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Golaghat district on Wednesday. Wokha Correspondent Thousands of people gathered at the Traffic Police Point, Wokha in the evening to show support for their fellow tribesmen facing hardships at Ralan area. With the crowd becoming unruly in demanding that they be immediately sent to Ralan to physically express their solidarity, the public leaders shifted the informal gathering to the Lotha Tribal Council hall near Wokha local ground. Eventually, the Kyong Hoho, KSU, and other Lotha frontal groups including the district administration were able to control the crowd and assuage their anger. MLA condemns: Meanwhile, 40 A/C Bhandari MLA Mmhonlumo Kikon has condemned the continuous provocations by Adivasis who burning of houses and properties in Ralan Area. Tuesday’s incident threatened the peaceful historical coexistence between Ahoms, Karbis and the Nagas and the use of ALNA activists in these attacks on Naga villages have vitiated the atmosphere, said the MLA. He also questioned the Assam police and administration for “not restraining the migrants” and demanded they take note of the agreement reached on the issue earlier. The lack of sincerity of the Assam government in resolving border issues have resulted in “historical disconnect” between the two people, said Mmhonlumo. He said Assam government should come forward for a joint probe into the incident.
