Tenzin Norbu: Thangka Painting Master བསྟན་འཛིན་ནོར་བུ། Tenzin Norbu left Tibet in 1987 with the goal of studying Tibetan medicine in India, but one of the first people he met in Dharamsala was Temba Chöphel, his late Thangka teacher, and the rest as they say is history. Norbu has been a practicing Thangka artist for more than two decades, becoming the Thangka instructor at Dharamsala’s Norbulingka Institute in 2007. His proudest achievement is the completion of a historical painting set depicting each of the fourteen Dalai Lamas. Although he was trained in the Menri school of painting, Norbu is also a keen admirer of the Karma Gardri style for its softer color palette, and greater use of landscape elements and empty spaces.
