Teresa Tcme My great grandmother told me about the Great Depression and how she and her neighbors were petrified with fear of having to be sent to the Debtors Prison or the Poor Farm... it was where if you had a debt and no way to pay it - you and your family were arrested and kept in prison farms - with barbed wire and men with shotguns - forced to do perform slave labor even the kids to pay your debt but they never paid enough to pay it off because they would also charge you rent and food - so your work never was worth enough to pay your debt... hence the saying working for the company store.... not just people of color either - anyone - anyone who had debt - this is what would become of you. My great grandmother made me promise to not ever be a borrower nor a lender... she was seriously fearful of this type of thing and it happened to a lot of her neighbors. She also said - they would get together on her street for dinners - pot lucks... to help each other ....
