Term of the Day: Furlough A furlough is a short or long term period of unpaid leave for employees of a company or government agency, usually resulting from adverse economic conditions. It is usually an alternative to massive layoffs. These involuntary furloughs may be short or long term, and many of those affected may seek other temporary employment during that time The word has been used in the USA for: • (Military) leave of absence from military duty or • (Business / government ) a temporary laying-off of employees, usually because there is insufficient work to occupy them Under the austerity policies being implemented in the UK, the word furlough might come into popular use not because there is not enough work to do, but because the government is not prepared to support the work that needs doing
