Terrible disaster from the typhoon in the Philippines. Pray and consider helping. An update from Mike Baumgartner. Hi Everyone This will be our last large email update on Typhoon Ruby. From here on you can follow our work on the website or Facebook page. On December 6, 2014 Super Typhoon Ruby(Hagupit) made landfall in Dolres, Samar with wind speeds over 215 km/h(130 mph). The storm moved very slowly over land so the strong winds lasted for up to 10 hours in some areas. By the time this storm ended 18 people lost their lives and damaged estimated to be over 75 million US dollars. In the area of Samar where we are concentrating our relief efforts more than 15,000 homes were destroyed Samar is one of the poorest areas in the Philippines. Many of these people work 7 days a week just to be able to provide one-days worth of food for their family. If they cannot earn enough that day their family goes hungry. The poor Filipinos have no insurance and the government assistance is almost nonexistent so when they lose everything from a typhoon they have a very hard time recovering. If they are hurt or injured during a typhoon they cannot afford a doctor’s visit so they suffer. There is still much work to be done to help these people recover. To date we have purchased over 2 tons of rice, canned & dried foods, 200 pairs of sippers(flip-flops), 856 pieces of cloths, school supplies for over 100 children , over 100 Bibles, new communion trays and cups, rubber boots, tarps, hammers, hand saws and other items as needed. In the town of Borongan alone 2,685 homes were totally destroyed and 5,888 homes were partially destroyed. These people are extremely poor. They work very hard but earn less than $10 a month. There simply is not enough work for them to make a living. The government aid is almost non-existent and foreign relief ad is not only hard to get but there simply is not enough to help everyone. We have been working in this area for around 12 months now with Edwin & Blenda Inso. Edwin is working with 6 congregations and a Bible Study Center that we built after last years typhoon. Edwin has many great volunteers working with him because of the great need Michael Stock will be lending a hand. He has much experience work relief efforts here in the Philippines and helping to raise funds. Also Mike Hildreth will be sending local preachers to help with handing out supplies and outreach and funds to help repair the Chapels. Our goal is to continue helping with food and supplies to those in need and start helping with repairs to those homes that can be repaired. For those families that had their homes totally destroyed we want to be able to rebuild at least 100 small homes starting with the brethren first then others if we have the funds to do so. We are going to build these houses out of concrete so hopefully they will be able to withstand a normal typhoon and be a safe place for shelter. These people lost everything but never complain or feel sorry for themselves. Please help us to help them. To be able to accomplish the above it is going to take lots of work and funds to buy the food and materials. If you can help you can donate online at disasterassistancecoc or make check payable to and mail to: Disaster Assistance Mission, 402 Center Way St, Lake Jackson, TX 77566. We are a 501C3 non-profit so your donation is tax deductible this year. Please consider giving and please share this letter with everyone you know. You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully. And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. (2 Corinthians 9:7-8) Please pray for the thousands of people whose lives have been forever changed and for us as we show the love of the Lord to them by just providing a simple meal, a bible study and a helping hand.
