Terrorism threat level – policing sector As a result of intelligence information and discussions with our partners, the terrorism threat level against police in Australia is assessed as high, which is commensurate with the broader threat level for the community. This rating of HIGH, which mirrors the terrorism threat level for Australia, means that a terrorist attack against police is assessed as likely. The Commissioner of Police, Darren Hine, has reassured police officers, DPEM staff and the community that there is no intelligence of any threat to Tasmania, Tasmania Police or policing interests in this state. “Understandably, the change may cause some concern, and I have reinforced with our officers and staff the need to remain vigilant and maintain our focus on prevention and preparedness, and follow appropriate safety and security measures. “The safety and security of the community and our officers and staff is a priority and I want to reiterate that there’s no intelligence of any threats specific to Tasmania, or policing in Tasmania,” said Mr Hine. “The level of HIGH will not impact on our day to day policing activities, and it won’t affect Tasmanians going about their daily lives,” said Mr Hine. “The wider community should not be alarmed, but continue to be vigilant,” said Mr Hine. “The safety of our officers will be enhanced in the coming months as we rollout multi-purpose integrated vests, which have sharp edge and ballistic protection. The personal issue vest will be a compulsory part of the uniform.” Unusual or suspicious activity should be reported to the National Security Hotline 1800 1234 00 or the Police Assistance Line 131 444.
