Terry Fox was a classmate/rugby teammate who lost a leg (above knee) to cancer soon after he was in University. He took up the challenge of trying to raise awareness and funding for cancer research and started a ultra marathon that worked out to running a marathon a day. He figured that if everyone gave a dollar then 30 million could be rasied for research. Sadly Terry was not able to be around to see the fruition of his efforts but there continues to be Terry Fox runs internationally to raise funds. So far 650 million dollars has been raised and amazingly over 84 cents on the dollar is put directly towards reseach. Previous events have been organised internationally including : Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) Bahrain Bangalore, India Beijing City International School, China Beijing Tsinghua International School, China Bermuda Bolivar, Missouri (U.S.A.) The Terry Fox Run, named in honour of Canadian amputee runner Terry Fox who at 21, attempted to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research, is no longer just a Canadian tradition. Countries around the world stage annual events in support of Terrys dream of finding a cure for cancer. Nearly all monies raised at Terry Fox Runs outside Canada are retained in the host country, funding cancer research projects at recognized research institutions approved by The Terry Fox Foundation on the advice of The Terry Fox Research Institute. As the world becomes more homogenized, so too does the Terry Fox Run. The Foundation is proud to be involved in a growing worldwide family dedicated to eradicating a disease that knows no political or geographic boundaries. International Run locations are organized by Canadian Embassies/Consulates, Canadian Forces Bases, Anti-Cancer Councils and Societies as well as other dedicated organizations and individuals. terryfox.org/Run/
