Terry Livgren tells how he became a follower of Jesus (from 2nd Chapter of Acts page) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The phone rang and on the other end was a gentleman with a southern drawl, My names Kerry Livgren and Im with a band called Kansas... I dont supposed that youve ever heard of us but Ive become a Christian. This was 1978 and OF COURSE we knew the band Kansas... they were the biggest band in the world! Not long afterwards Kerry would fly out to our studio in Northridge, California and would spend several days with us, playing keyboards and guitar, and arranging some parts for the REJOICE album. (tiny.cc/a9ftfx) Kerry was a brilliant musician, a brilliant mind, and had recently concluded an intense search which led him to a deep faith in Christ. This is some of the greatest stuff Ive ever played on! Kerry exclaimed. The sad part is that most of the audience who comes to hear [Kansas] will never get a chance to hear it. And he was right. Christian music began to segment itself out of the culture with sales in Christian stores and was played on Christian radio, etc., and for all the good that was, there were many young culture kids who never would hear the band. Even before Kerry came to faith there was a spiritual searching in his song writing with songs like Dust in The Wind (a surprise hit for them) and after his conversion even stronger spiritual themes, leading lead singer Steve Walsh to quit the band in disgust. Im not singing this, Steve declared. I dont believe it. Later Kerry asked Matthew if he would like to take over vocal duties for Kansas... Matt declined. Kerrys work was particularly noticeable on the song REJOICE and the friendship we formed with him was a wonderful blessing to the 2nd Chapter of Acts. He would later fly to Texas and play on the Singer Sower recording.
