Terry: Monism, a singular belief or belief system that believes - TopicsExpress

Terry: Monism, a singular belief or belief system that believes itself to be the one answer to the worlds problems. By this definition, there are very few monisms out there that need to be taken at all seriously. I dont recall meeting anyone who thought that they had the one answer to all the worlds problems. They might think they had a really good idea and one that would make a big difference. But people dont typically think that theyre going to overcome death, disease, racism, war, poverty, pollution, land disputes, and whatever else you can think of, with just one idea or system. They might think that their ideas will make it easier to address those problems, though, by reducing the amount of wasted time, effort, and resources. So, this strikes me as a bit of a strawman the way its stated. Let me add, as well, that its entirely possible for someone to believe that their particular moral system is true and valid universally and still not believe that people adopting such a moral system will allow them to solve every problem in the world. One can distinguish between people who are good (morally) and people who are competent or wise or capable. Again, being morally good might make it easier to become competent and wise and capable. But it doesnt, on its own, allow you to cure cancer or solve your water issues. You know of course that anarchy cannot exist without coercion either, without authority. Right? Since Im not against coercion or authority themselves, this is not a problem for me. Im not a pacifist, so coercion is not inherently wrong, unless you define coercion to mean wrongful use of force, in which case, no, anarchy does not require it. But I dont usually use it in that way. As for authority, again, Im calling for egalitarianism of political authority, so its no embarrassment to find out that my system of equal political authority requires authority. Its sort of built-in already.
