Tertiary students work rights Part-time work rights You can work part-time for up to 20 hours per week if your full-time programme of study meets one of the following criteria: It is at least two years in duration It leads to a New Zealand qualification that qualifies for points towards an application for a Skilled Migrant visa. It lasts for at least one full academic year and you are taking part in an approved tertiary exchange scheme. It is at a private training establishment or tertiary institution, and the main purpose is to develop English language skills - you must also have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall band score of 5.0 or above in the general or academic modules. It is full-time English language study lasting at least 14 consecutive weeks’ duration at a university or an education provider that holds Category One status under the New Zealand Qualification Authority’s External Evaluation Review quality assurance system*. You are a New Zealand Aid Programme scholarship student studying under one of the following schemes: New Zealand Development Scholarship Commonwealth Scholarship New Zealand Pacific Scholarship New Zealand Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Scholars Award. * credit for previous English language study undertaken will be given if your ongoing study is continuous (ie no breaks), you held a student visa, and you enrol with the same university or Category One education provider for a subsequent course. For example, if you have completed a 10 week course at the University of Auckland and enrol in a subsequent 10 week English language course starting immediately, you will be eligible for part-time work rights as your total continuous study time of 20 weeks exceeds 14 consecutive weeks duration.
