Tesla Motors has opened its use of technology it has patented with the aim of encouraging competitors to move more boldly ahead with producing low/no exhaust vehicles. I only have this curious press release from their CEO to work with, but on the face of it this appears to be a substantial clearing of the path. Ill be interested to see if, as I suspect is the case, some key patents have been retained and protected - not that theres anything inherently wrong with that. My understanding of the companys path is that their true future is based on the power/battery tech which will be used in countless applications beyond transportation.
