Test scores have dropped. The deficit is growing. And 100,000 students futures hang in the balance. Whats the plan to fix Detroits schools? And by Detroits schools, we mean all of them under the public umbrella: Detroit Public Schools, the nations largest system of charter schools, and the Education Achievement Authority. All three together dont comprise a respectable fulfillment of the states obligation to provide an adequate education for every child. And its time for the state, which has played a crucial policy role in either creating the conditions for educational failure in Detroit and in the chronically unsuccessful fixes, to step up. For Michigans next governor, its a clear assignment: Fix it.
