Testimonial Tuesday: Pamela’s story, “The quality of life that I had prior to surgery with Dr. Grimm was unacceptable for a 56-year-old woman. I wanted to go on a cruise with my husband, go shopping with my daughters, walk the fields with my sons, and run with and chase after my grandchildren. I should have been able to live life to the fullest. I had surgery to remove bone spurs on August 29, 2011. After surgery, the pain in my back was alleviated to some degree, but I became more concerned about the difficulty I had trying to stand straight. I was using a walker prior to surgery and I hoped that after the surgery I would be able to graduate from the walker to a cane and finally be able to walk unassisted. Throughout the month of September 2011, I repeatedly tried to stop using the walker. However, my back was unable to support me when I tried to walk unassisted. At the same time, I was struggling with the numbness in my feet and I became increasingly concerned about the numbness in my buttocks, thighs, and calves of my legs. When I met with Dr. Grimm to discuss the concerns I had regarding the numbness, he reviewed the results of a recent MRI and determined that I needed to have major surgery to not only fix ruptured discs, but also to insert cages between the vertebrae to stabilize my spine. The surgery was scheduled for March 30, 2012. I can’t thank Dr. Grimm enough not only for giving me a straight back, but also for taking so much time to make sure I knew exactly what he was doing. In addition to Dr. Grimm, I also want to thank Heather for squeezing me in for an appointment when I was worried about one of my scars. Dr. Grimm has literally saved my life! Prior to surgery I had no hope for any type of activity in my life. At a minimum, when I did try to walk with the walker, every step I took was painful. Now, I have a straight back and with time, I will be able to gain my strength and walk unassisted without pain. Since my surgery, my youngest daughter helped me drive to Grand Rapids, Michigan, to watch my oldest daughter in a Purdue crew race and to attend the crew banquet. Not only did I get to see my oldest daughter, but I was also able to spend quality time with my youngest daughter during the drive. I am now able to walk to the baseball diamond and watch my grandsons’ baseball games as well as watch their football and basketball games. My biggest achievement was attending the 2012-2013 season of my youngest daughter’s basketball games at F.J. Reitz High School and watching my husband coach her team, all without any assistive devices and totally free of back pain. These wonderful memories would not have been possible without Dr. Grimm.”
