Texan fiddle legend Eck Robertson originally recorded the unaccompanied version of Sallie Gooden and his 13 variations in 1922, making his the first official recording of a country musician. Later his student, the Texas fiddle icon Benny Thomasson perfected the long-formed version of Sally Goodin in the 1940s and created the rendition that most people emulate today, including that of his protege Mark OConnor. While there are influences in OConnors version from both Roberston and Thomasson, OConnor adds his own variations and style developed from the previous masters he learned from in the 1970s. OConnor was 14 when he met Eck Robertson at a fiddle contest at Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. He was age 12 to 14 when he took private lessons with Benny Thomasson in the state of Washington becoming Thomassons prize pupil and the winner of more national, regional and state fiddle contests in the history of American fiddling. At the time of this recording in 2012, OConnor played Sally Goodin like he owned it...and perhaps rightly so. The line of Eck - Benny - Mark is now the stuff of legend. https://youtube/watch?v=V2Ty9EtNW5w&index=21&list=PL775E3007859FBDD1
