Texas Lrd Sports Wire News Magazine “Sunday Commentary” By Nationally Published Photojournalist Nuno & Publisher of The Sports Wire News Network Behold the playoff scene for the first time in recent memory of sports fans has in high school sports three teams at the same time in the second round of UIL High School Football playoffs. While Laredo Alexander and Laredo United recently have gone into the third round. The Laredo Martin Tigers are in the verge of doing so as well. In the high school football circuit few apply from out of town for a job when they open in the inner city in Laredo. Everyone understands the school district is locked down and can’t and won’t expand ever again. Even fewer have tried to make a career statement coming to coach and teach about life at Laredo Martin High School. It is one of toughest jobs as a head coach and campus coordinator around UIL Region IV sports ever imagined. Yet, with a small campus in population a resounding statement has been made by Coach Charles. He now carries the title of Bi-District Champion in his resume. He learned one thing while being at Laredo three now from the well documented accomplishments at Laredo United and Laredo Alexander in recent times. You play yes to win district. If not district then win enough to not come in fourth place in the playoff slots. Well, Coach Charles did the impossible. He did not win district. He did beat the cross district rival the Laredo Nixon Mustangs in a dramatic win. Then he went on and won the Bi-District Championship from the fourth playoff slot in district. Remarkable accomplishment. Really, it is remarkable. His coaching staff did one thing few understand. They worked the tails off the few players in their football program. They don’t have the luxury of having over 100 athletes in football. They were only able to field two teams a small JV team and a small team in varsity in numbers. When you look at a sideline when the Laredo Martin Tigers play. You see the contrast in football programs in numbers. Other teams have 45 players Laredo Martin barely have 35 at times on the varsity sideline because they can’t call to many from JV or that would force the JV team to have less than 25 players. Coach Charles and his coaching staff had one thing working for them. They have an Athletic Director that was the Laredo Martin Tiger head coach at one point. He knows the trials and tribulations associated coaching at Laredo Martin Tiger. Sources explain that the AD and Superintendent have one simple idea on coaching. Both were collegian sports athletes so both Coach Ramirez the Ad and Superintendent Marcos Nelson only want to express to the three head coaches in their ranks at LISD to win. Both feel that it does not where you coach but how you coach and found a coach that can coach with his coaching staff with Coach Charles. Remarkable considering the very small number of athletes coming out for football. Now that Laredo Martin has won the first ever playoff game under a head coach it will for all Tiger history have Coach Charles name and the names of all the coaches in his care. It’s time to reflect what a tremendous accomplishment it was to have won a playoff game in such conditions. Few dared to venture to Laredo and coach those that have at Laredo have done it like Coach Charles. With so few players with limited practice area he found a way to do one thing few understand. He coached the day lights of his players and for that he should have his resume expanded to GOD status in Laredo Martin High School circles. In JV games head coaches of a high school program tend to hang around those games and chat with other coaches and take in part of the game and then leave. Which is normal in so many ways in other programs of high school football in Texas. In Laredo well they do things different. Coach Charles goes to all the JV games with all his coaches and they are part of the mix in coaching players in JV during the game. The JV head coach does his thing in the game. Coach Charles would be all year in 2013 talking and coaching all JV game on plays and technique to his players. All of his coaches would be there as well including the offensive and defensive coordinators. All doing what it took to get a program in Texas High School football up and running. No one dared come to Laredo Martin and coach football. Coach Charles did and his coaching staff now are Bi-District Champions and they want more. LISD picked wisely from all the local few coaches that applied to pick Coach Charles who came from the Del Rio Ram football program. Something the AD Coach Ramirez and the Superintendent Dr. Marcos Nelson sat down and recommend to the Principal at Laredo Martin High School to pick with the Coach Charles. If Coach Charles and his coaching staff did it with no practice field, limited equipment, limited number of football players. What is the outlook for the other programs in Texas football? What can they say when they look and while many are at home working on next year? The Martin Tigers in 2013 are working their limited number of players that came out for Texas high school football getting ready for the Area Championship. LISD you picked the right man the right coach to run the football program at the oldest high school in Laredo. There is no question now on that aspect from any way you want to look at this. Destiny called and when it did Coach Charles stared it down and did not blink once. Destiny placed a Bi-District Champion on Coach Charles resume. When it is present in the far future to other AD’s. Those reviewing it will stare at it stare up at Coach Charles and would say “you went to Laredo and won a championship at LISD.” Where ever Coach Charles goes whenever he leaves Laredo. He proved you coach up and not pray for talent to be there in your program. In the end those that can motivate young athletes to do outstanding things in a football program. Those that can win with what they have will look forever at what Coach Charles did in 2013 at Laredo Martin High School. Simply he proved when you are a coach you coach up. No excuses no buts just as they say in Laredo do it with “GANAS.” We have spirit we have spirit yes we do. How about you? We have more we have more we have Coach Charles spirit say the Martin Tigers for all the ages.
