Texas Odyssey wrap up.............Friday found Nick and me packing everything up ready to return home. We drove around for awhile catching sights that looked interesting and grab some lunch. Neither of us had ever had In and Out Burgers and they were recently atop a consumer ranking for best. We tried them. They were good, but dont hold a candle to Sonic Drive Ins or to Steak and Shake. Our rental car received a major scratch along the drivers side door while parked at the motel by persons unknown and by the time I finished the paper work it was time to head to the railroad depot. Train 22, the Texas Eagle rolled out of Dallas headed for Chicago, and we both sat, eyes glued to the windows, in our compartment catching last glimpses. Aside from a couple fridge magnets I didnt buy myself any souvenirs. The day before, at a western wear store, I had tried on a pair of boots bearing a price tag of $1,000. Fortunately.......I didnt like them. I mentioned earlier where Nick was pointing out steak houses....and I was ignoring the pointings. He was not deprived. On both legs of the trip the lead menu item in the dining car was Angus sirloin steak and we jumped on it both times. Amtrack food is good......not like the dining cars of yore in the 50s and 60s that I remember.......but good. They fill all the booths, so if you are a party of two.....youll be seated with another party of two. You get to meet some great people that way........train folks are ALL good folks. While still light we spent some time in the observation car that is mostly glass offering views of both sides. Nick wanted to bunk early so we pulled his bed down from the ceiling and he hopped in. I left the seats up for awhile and caught up on a newspaper. For many years one of my favorite things is to have the porter make up my bed a little early, give me a couple extra pillows and I prop myself up with the lights out and watch the night go by. Friday I saw something I had never either seen, or noticed before. A big full moon was sending its ghostly silver light to illuminate the countryside. I was amazed at how much I could see till I dropped off lulled by the swaying of the train. Changed trains in Chicago Saturday and arrived in Jackson last night. I drove home earlier today after stopping to pick up a few bags of Better Mades dark Rainbow chips, and a few bottles of Faygos Rock & Rye, along with a bag of fresh roasted whole bean from: The Jackson Coffee Roasters. I do believe the trip was a success !
