Textile and Apparel Studies A girl studiesThe Textile and Apparel Studies major prepares students for careers in the dynamic, fast-paced fashion industry. Students gain knowledge about industry processes and products, and focus their studies in Fashion Design, Product Development or Merchandising to meet specific career plans. Courses are designed to be stimulating and challenging, with opportunities to develop leadership, communication and professional skills. The major builds on multiple perspectives to assure that graduates can succeed in a culturally diverse and global industry. The program follows guidelines approved by the International Textile and Apparel Association to assist in curriculum development and assessment. Program Options Fashion Design Emphasis The Fashion Design career option offers courses in design principles, apparel construction, pattern making and computer aided design. Fashion Design majors complete 18 to 24 credits at The American Intercontinental University in London or Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City as a part of their WMU program. Merchandising Emphasis The Merchandising option includes courses that emphasize business and professional skills needed for careers in retail management, buying, and marketing. Product Development Emphasis The Product Development option prepares students for opportunities in technical design and product development in retail and apparel marketing firms by offering courses in both design and merchandising.
