Tha-Mula Bandha, An Asana Master Key: Makes Forward Bends - TopicsExpress

Tha-Mula Bandha, An Asana Master Key: Makes Forward Bends Safer When I first started postural Yoga I was instructed to keep my back straight when going into a forward bend. At first this caused no pain or problem I was aware of, but after 18 months it did. I persisted with Yoga, but it was not until I started training with Simon Borg-Olivier and putting Tha-Mula Bandha into practice that forward bends started feeling good rather than hurting. I think there are some reasonably straight forward biomechanical reasons why this is the case. I plan to discuss this in future posts. I also plan to discuss why spinal flexion may also be of benefit to the health of the spine. In the current video I also discuss what I think is a major value of forward bends, which is their ability to afford access to massaging the internal organs. I would like to propose the idea that forward bends may never have been conceived of as a hamstring stretch per se, but rather that the gentle tensioning of the hamstrings in forward bends combined with spinal flexion and diaphragmatic breathing afforded unique access to the internal organs for massage. Simon Borg-Olivier will be delivering a workshop in Brisbane from 10 to 12 Oct 2014 at New Farm State School Hall (Cnr Heal and James Streets, New Farm).
