Thai Cultural Trivia: Chiang Mai had been once a somewhat dependent state until 1899 became under total control of what was then Siam. Precedent to this political mergence was 1883 marriage proposal of King Rama V to a 10-year-old Princess Dararasmi, daughter of an ailing ruler Indrawishananda of Chiang Mai, in retaliation to political endeavour of child-and-shagless Queen Victoria to adopt the Princess. Dararasmi got married three years later, was expatriated to Bangkok and was not allowed for once to return home until 1909 - 23 years after the marriage.
