Thailand claimed H7N9 to be free! - KHON KAEN, 13 March 2014 (NNT) – The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization has sounded the alarm about the risk of the H7N9 bird flu virus possibly crossing the border from China to neighboring countries. The virus, which produces no detectable symptoms among infected birds, has been detected in chickens in Guangxi and Yunnan in China, bordering Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam. Bird flu watchers have counted at least 290 confirmed illnesses and 66 human deaths resulting from the virus being transmitted from animals to humans. Dr. Ophas Karnkawinpong, Deputy Director General of the Department of Disease Control, said that Thailand has been continuously free from bird flu while there have been sporadic bird flu outbreaks in other countries. This reflects that Thailand has had effective preventive measures since Thailand was hit by a bird flu outbreak in 2006. From then until now, the virus has not been detected, in either animals and poultry so there is no need to panic. Director of the Office of Disease Prevention and Control from Khon Kaen Province has emphasized that relevant agencies need to be ready, especially the Public Health Office, Provincial Offices of Livestock, Surveillance and Rapid Response Teams and Village Health Volunteers who need to be alert to detect anomalies in the area. The following are tips for those living in potentially affected areas: - Poultry farms or farmers who keep poultry in the communities have to be more careful about sick poultry that have died of unusual symptoms by not touching or eating them. - If you inevitably have to touch poultry, especially sick poultry that has died of unusual symptoms, you should not touch them with your bare hands. - People need to wear gloves to prevent themselves from getting infected with the virus and its important to always properly wash hands with soap and clean water for at least three minutes. - Houses should be kept clean with no unknown poultry on the premises. - Waste needs to be eliminated properly by not letting animals’ excretion to remain exposed for long. - Depressed poultry with messy hair and dead poultry should be avoided. Stick to the slogan, eat hot food, use serving spoons and wash hands properly. If any poultry have died with unusual symptoms, please immediately inform Livestock Officers, Village Health Volunteers or community leaders.
