Thailand on the medal trail.....watch out London, Rhinos and Tigers are on the loose.....its Haka time in Auckland....gearing up in Spa for Belgium GP.....battle for Ryder Cup places....EPL Round 2 Team Thailand are hot on the medal trail in the Summer Youth Olympics being held in Nanjing 16th to 28th August. This is the second time the Summer Youth Olympics have been held, the first being in Singapore in August 2010. The Games have attracted 201 Nations, represented by some 3600 athletes fighting for medals in 222 events over 28 sports. China are currently leading the way with 16 gold, 6 silver and 11 bronze with Team GB in 6th place with a 9 medal haul of 3 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze. But Team Thailand are not far behind in 14th place with a 6 medal haul including 2 gold, 1 silver, and 3 bronze. Thai teenager Panipak Wongpattanakit kicked her way to taekwondo gold whilst weightlifter Rattanaphon Pakkaratha claimed Thailand’s second gold medal in the girls section ; Sakda Meebon took silver in the boys weightlifting; golfers Danthai Boonma and Supamas Sangchan each won bronze medals and badminton player Busanan Ongbamrungphan added a third bronze yesterday. Great performance Thailand....chok dee !!! Today London will be packed with Rhinos and Tigers, who have descended on the countys Capital from the playing fields of Yorkshire. Theyre heading for Wembley in the quest for The Rugby League Challenge Cup which was first played for in 1897 in Leeds between Batley and St Helens before a crowd of some 13,500. The first Wembley final was played in 1929, to grow the appeal of the sport outside of the traditional northern heartland. A crowd of some 41,500 attended but Rugby Leagues biggest ever UK crowd was for the 1954 Cup Final replay between Warrington and Halifax when102,569 people crammed into Bradfords Odsal stadium to see The Wire victorious 8-4. Todays game features West Yorkshire neighbours and rivals Castleford Tigers and Leeds Rhinos and a momentous game is in store. Leeds will look to overcome 15 years of cup heartache, including six final losses since their 1999 triumph, while Castleford return to the showpiece event for the first time in more than two decades. Im going for a Leeds Rhinos victory....and no doubt whoever wins there will be lots of pints of Tetleys Bitter consumed, after all they are the sponsors. At the other side of the world another rugby battle will be fought today as New Zealand face Australia in Round 2 of The Championship at Eden Park, Auckland. The All Blacks have an incredible record on this ground and have not lost to Australia here since September 1986. But today The Wallabies might be fancying their chances after last weeks draw. The All Blacks started well but faded and Australia finished the last match looking the stronger side. Should be a cracker...and of course the match will be preceded by the most awe inspiring and intimidating sight, The Hakka...... Over in Belgium the noise levels will increase as practice continues for The Belgium GP at Spa. Hamilton dominated the 2nd Practice session ahead of Mercedes team mate Rosberg. All eyes today will be on qualifying......the F1 battle goes on.... And the battle for Ryder Cup places continues. With under 5 weeks to go to Ryder Cup 2014 action at Gleneagles a number of players are jostling to catch the eye of Team Captains McGinley and Watson, as they ponder their Wild Card Selections. European Ryder Cup hopefuls Ian Poulter and Luke Donald are outside the automatic top-nine qualifying spots and both missed the cut at the Barclays PGA Event. Eight-time Cup veteran Lee Westwood is another in danger of missing out but rounds of 70 and 73 meant he made the weekend at one over. European Ryder Cup qualifying ends after next weeks Italian Open before captain Paul McGinley names three wildcards on 2 September. Automatic selection for the USA is settled with captain Tom Watson making his three wildcard picks on 3 September. Another Ryder Cup spectacular in prospect...bring it on !!! Some tasty soccer clashes looming for the weekend also. Match of the weekend is Mondays Man City vs Liverpool confrontation ..... surely it would have been even more spicy if Balotelli had signed in time. Interesting move by Liverpool...just got rid of one controversial player, Suarez, and now taking on another one. Important game for Chelsea as they take on EPL newcomers Leicester whilst Everton face the Gunners at Goodison. A couple of London derbies at Palace (vs West Ham) and Spurs (vs QPR) , and could Man United be on another banana skin at Sunderland ? In The Championship an intriguing local derby Ipswich vs Norwich, big game at Middlesboro (vs Sheffield Wednesday) and its promoted Wolves relegated Cardiff...... First up for me today will be All Blacks vs Wallabies....and lots more action to follow. Well keep you posted.....
