~~Thaiya Spruill-Smith (2-year-old) dead following months of abuse. A 2 year-old girl has died, and her step-dad charged, after she succumbed to severe brain trauma following months of abuse. David Adams (25) hurt little Thaiya Spruill-Smith for months, before she was brought to Brookdale Hospital on Thursday. Thaiyas mother, Teoka Spruill (24) woke up about 6 a.m. Thursday, when she realized her daughter was having trouble breathing, and 40 minutes later, called 911. Emergency responders did CPR in the family’s Dumont Avenue apartment before rushing her to Brookdale Hospital, authorities said. Once Thaiya was admitted, doctors discovered suspicious bruising to her arms and forehead, a CAT-scan soon revealed the child was bleeding from the brain. Doctors told family members that she was brain dead, and was on life support until she died at 7:30 p.m. Friday, police confirmed. Adams admitted to shaking the child and throwing her on a bed, once an autopsy is completed Adams is expected to face a murder charge, police said. Thaiya’s relatives told the NYPD’s Child Abuse Squad that the abuse was going on for months. The child’s mother married Adams in March shortly after meeting him. For now, he has been charged with assault, reckless assault on a child, and endangering the welfare of a child.
