Thames River gets poor rating by World Wildlife Fund study The Thames River received an overall poor score in a study by the World Wildlife Fund. The study released last week outlined the status of several rivers in Canada including the Thames River that runs through London and the surrounding communities. “The results of this study are very alarming,” says Irene Mathyssen, MP for London-Fanshawe. “This river is a heritage river and vital to our communities. The fact that it received a poor rating means we need to be stepping up the protection levels of the river.” The Thames River was protected federally under the Navigable Waters Act until changes to the law earlier this year. “The Conservatives have been stripping away environmental protections and this will have a detrimental effect on the environment and our communities,” says Mathyssen. Mathyssen has introduced a private member’s bill to once again include the Thames in the Navigable Waters Act.
