Thangu This is the last civilian base on your way from Lachen - TopicsExpress

Thangu This is the last civilian base on your way from Lachen to Gurudongmar Lake. The Thangu valley is adjacent to Chopta Valley which is another tourist attraction in North Sikkim. Thangu is a major base of Indian Army. It is used to acclimatise the soldiers before they are send to higher altitude posts. There are some civilian population around here including some tea stalls and basic homestay accommodations. But one should be cautious about overnight stay at Thangu as it is at an altitude of about 13000 feet and tourists staying here without proper acclimatisation may face problems of altitude sickness. Also authorities are reluctant to permit overnight stay for tourists here due to the altitude as well as military importance of the place. Most tourists visit Thangu on their way to Gurudongmar. For International tourists, the tour is limited to Chopta Valley adjacent to here. This is also the last place where you will see good vegetation as beyond Thangu the terrain terns into Tibetan desert type with very little or no vegetation to be seen. At Thangu you also have the unique experience of being further north from most of the snow peaks of the Himalayan range including the Kanchenjunga range. The Kanchenjunga and its associated peaks now fall south west of where you are. Source : mytourideas/thangu.php
