Thank You Angeleno Animal Lovers! LA Animal Services Live/Save Rate Highest in History Los Angeles Animal Services completed its fiscal year on June 30, 2014 and reached another milestone towards a No-Kill Los Angeles. Never, in the history of Los Angeles Animal Services, have the deaths of dogs and cats been lower. This year alone, there was a 26% decline (from 17,069 to 12,680). This number is even more remarkable when you consider that cat impounds are down by 5% (21,083 to 19,938) and dog impounds are down by 10% (33,743 to 30,318). And, our live/save rate is up from 63.5% to 70.3% (34,822 to 35,315). How did we do it? We did it with the hope, heart, energy and tremendous support of amazing groups and individuals who believe that we can save them all. And yes, we still have a lot of work to do. The unique public private partnership with Best Friends Animal Society is not only saving Los Angeles well over $3 million dollars annually operating the Northeast Shelter, it is saving the lives of thousands of companion animals, providing free and low-cost spay/neuter surgeries for community pets and providing generous financial and technical support to NKLA Coalition members. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is providing a pilot program called “Felinality” at our Harbor shelter that is getting more cats into the homes they deserve and they are operating the Spay/Neuter Clinic at South LA, Chesterfield Square shelter. Generous grant funding from the ASPCA is underwriting the fees for New Hope Rescue Partners to pull shelter animals at no cost. SNP LA operates two spay/neuter clinics associated with two City shelters providing spay/neuter surgeries for shelter animals and for community pets. Value Vet also operates a spay/neuter clinic at one City Shelter. These amazing clinics help get our shelter pets ready for adoption and they accept Los Angeles Animal Services vouchers to provide low-cost or free pet sterilization surgeries for Angelenos. We also contract spay/neuter surgeries through mobile spay/neuter clinics such as the Amanda Foundation, Spay for LA and Lucy Pet Foundation. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) operates a Pets for Life Program in Boyle Heights where the residents get education, pet training and free medical care including spay/neuter surgeries for their pets. There are 237 New Hope Rescue Partners, a partnership with Love & Leashes, three intervention teams - at our largest shelters - who help people keep their animals, and countless others who have also made the difference for LA animals. Whether you are part of a large organization, a member of our staff, an elected City official, a volunteer or one of our very generous donors, this is your celebration. Together we have made a difference for thousands of animals and people who love them. Together we have tackled the issues and worked together. The animals are winning because of you. Sincerely, Brenda F. Barnette General Manager To save more animals, visit our website to adopt, foster or donate: LAAnimalServices.
