Thank goodness again for the invention of DVRs...didnt realize Glee returned last week, and on Tuesday nights now...ugh! Dilemma for me is I can only record 2 shows at the same time, and I normally record Marvels Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Originals at the hour of 8:00-9:00 PM. Well, my son sort of decided it for me...Ill have to sacrifice The Originals and record the other 2 instead...Ill have to catch up with The Originals via the internet, which is fine since Im the only one in the house who watches it anyway. Glee reminds me of past kids-in-school musicals, like Grease (in fact, there was a Grease-themed Glee episode), Fame and, more recently, Disneys High School Musical film series. As for Glee, its a musical dramedy series created by Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy, the same guys who, believe it or not, are giving us that scary FX series American Horror Story, currently on hiatus until next season. Glee centers on the glee club from the fictional William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio, as they compete for Sectionals, Regionals, Nationals, whatever als, on the show choir competition circuit. The glee club is led by Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison). Creating problems and drama, although mostly comical (should this be called dramical?), is Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), the villain of the show...Sue is the coach of the WMHS cheerleading squad, and a bully to both students and faculty members alike...since her cheerleading squad competes with the glee club for the schools limited funding, Sue is often at odds with Will and his glee club. The musical performances on Glee have been excellent. The glee club have performed hits from as far back as the 60s to the present...shows include hits from The Beatles, Madonna, Britney Spears, Bruno Mars, pretty much anything and everything. Notable guest stars who performed musical numbers on Glee include Idina Menzel (Adele Dazeem to John Travolta on The Oscars), Kristin Chenoweth, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Hudson, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Demi Lovato. Currently in its 5th season, Glee has undergone some cast changes within the last couple of years because it is, after all, a show about kids in high school and it wouldnt be realistic if the same kids stuck around in WMHS after 4 years. What the writers have done is they kept certain high school graduates around to show how theyre handling their lives after they graduated...those few who have stuck around after graduation are Rachel Berry (Lea Michele), Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer), and Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera), and theyre all roommates in a NYC loft...now living in the big city, they struggle with college, classes, jobs, auditions, interpersonal relationships, etc., as they all dream of stardom and making it big one day. Another high school graduate they kept around was Finn Hudson, played by Cory Montieth, who died last year of a drug overdose. The characters, Finn and Rachel, have been on-again-off-again boyfriend-and-girldfriend, and in reality, Montieth was reportedly dating castmate Lea Michele at the time of his death. Since Montieth was still part of the cast, the Glee writers had to include an episode that dealt with the death of Finn Hudson...that tribute to Finn, and to actor Cory Montieth, resulted in the 5th season episode titled The Quarterback...it was a pretty heart-wrenching episode, as it shows how Finns death impacted those who were closest to him, especially Leas character Rachel. As I mentioned, Glee has made some cast changes along the way. I, for one, prefer the kids who started the show from the beginning, and if it was up to me, I probably would have just wrapped the series when they graduated. The new kids on the block are fine...theyre just not the same...Im sure, like anything, itll take time for me to get used to the new kids. IMO, keeping some of the old kids around, just might be hampering me from accepting the new ones, so this is one of those cases where if you bring in newbies, and you want us to like the newbies, then just stick with the newbies only...however, to rid the show of the old kids totally would probably lose the viewers even more, so theres the conundrum. In any case, Im stuck with Glee, and my family has stuck with Glee, through thick and thin...if youre into musicals, Glee would be your type of show.
