Thank you ALL veterans for your service. Did you know that many blue chip HOF baseball players served our military during war? Some notables are COBB, GROVER ALEXANDER in WW1, DIMAGGIO, TED WILLIAMS, MUSIAL, GREENBERG, BERRA,SNIDER AND JACKIE ROBINSON in WW2 and ERNIE BANKS, WILLIE MAYS, WHITEY FORD, EDDIE MATHEWS AND TED WILLIAMS in the KOREAN WAR. YES, TED WILLIAMS SERVED OUR MILITAR IN WAR TWICE!!! How many of our baseball heroes would do this in todays world? Ted Williams was actually shot down in the Korean war and stayed with the plane and successfully landed it without ejecting. Teddy ballgame didnt want to break his legs while ejecting because he wouldnt be able to play baseball anymore. Talk about for the love of the game by the greatest pure hitter of all time. Below is an original TYPE 1 photo of the splendid splinter in his plain. Also below are two original photos of one of the greatest pitchers of all time who lost his life in the war effort, Christy Mathewson. Christy was a member of the original HOF class, Late in the 1918 season, Mathewson enlisted in the United States Army for World War I. His wife Jane was very much opposed to the decision, but Mathewson insisted on going.[16] He served overseas as a captain in the newly formed Chemical Service along with Ty Cobb. When he arrived in France, he was accidentally gassed during a chemical training exercise and subsequently developed tuberculosis. The Christian Gentleman eventually died from the disease /gave his life for his country. Mathewson loved to play checkers and was said to be as good at them as he was a pitcher. His checkers are displayed at the baseball hof. Below is a picture of Matty(middle) playing with his brothers during ww1. The other photo is Matty in uniform on his way back home after he was subjected to the gas which would ultimately claim his life.
