Thank you Annie Catherine for nominating me for the ALS ice water bucket challenge. ALS is a disease that is also known as Lou Gehrigs Disease because of its infamous toll on the famous baseball player Lou Gehrig. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. It affects the motor neurons and spinal cord. Motor neurons control your muscle movement, and as you lose control of your muscles you slowly become paralyzed. ALS causes you to lose both voluntary and involuntary muscle control, which affects your breathing, swallowing, and all other muscle movement. Its a terrible disease that takes the life of 2 per 100,000 people a year and about 5,600 people are diagnosed with it in the United States every year.
