Thank you Chris Conrad for sharing. Fascinating stuff! Intuitively we do recognize the animals intelligence and capacities, to a larger or lesser extent, by observation and by interaction. Anyone who played or swam with dolphins will have no doubt of their near-human intelligence. This means two things: First animals are no less deserving of our compassion and most importantly respect / PROTECTION, and even the lesser ones do too - All animals and organisms on this planet. Second, the fact that a Chimp , a whale or a crustacean may have evolved a highly complex nervous system, and the implied intelligence is not the end of the story. All animals have a spirit too, and that gives them their unique personalities, higher intelligence and so on. A dolphins brain structure reveals the perfection of its evolved physiology to its particular niche. Mankinds brain structure has retained its elasticity and generalization as we are masters of all trades - if you forgive the simplistic analogy. Where we differ is that we have potential to create our own niche far and beyond the natural limits, and other abilities too. That capacity though should also recognize and embody a humble, mature and responsible role for not only being an integral component of the biosphere but one that revers the sacredness of life everywhere.
